Borgo Argenina's Story
Borgo Argenina (tiny village) was first mentioned in historical documents in 998 AD when Baron Ricasoli donated part of the hamlet to the monks of Badia Coltibuono abbey.
The peasants that lived there worked hard for the Baron and then for the monastery. Though their stone houses were beautiful and skillfully made they had a very hard, poor life.

I Fall in Love
I was working as a fashion designer in Milan when I first saw Borgo Argenina. I was on a tour of Tuscany when I spotted five stone houses on top of a rolling hill, overlooking the vineyards.
The site was deserted and had been neglected for more than fifty years. No power, no running water, no bathrooms.
The ruins were covered in weeds, the ceiling had fallen in and the access road was in terrible condition.
I immediately fell in love with this little village and in 1992 decided to move to Gaiole in Chianti with my ten years old daughter Fiorenza, to restore it and to live there for the rest of my life. Perhaps I had a vision, or maybe I was just crazy...

The restoration took five years. I worked there every day with a great group of skilled workers.
It was an overwhelming, intensive project involving, among other things, digging wells, getting the hamlet's first ever electrical and water connections, repairing walls and roofs, adding bathrooms and laying the access road.
One day an Italian journalist came to visit us. In his article for a local newspaper he wrote: "We are about to get a new miracle in Chianti!" Next to the article there was my photo, taken while I was scrubbing and refinishing an old door. Over my shoulder were not only the remaining 46 doors, but an entire medieval hamlet to restore!

Borgo Argenina B&B started in March 1998.
1000 years after its first mention in the historical papers. Incredible!
My dream had finally come true.
